So, I got caught up in the hype and watched the LOST Final Season premiere. The little recap before the show was helpful but I can imagine true LOST fans hating on the abridged version of the series. I would be if I had been watching the show for 5 years to see it summed up in 45 minutes. LOST, along with 24, is one of those TV series I am waiting to end so I can netflix the whole series and see it as a whole story. Gotta admit though, the premiere had me making the same “huh?” face I had for 5 hours when I watched Season 1 on a flight to New York. Now for the picture, Nike endorses LOST by making a Dharma Initiative shoe. Check out the other pics at Hypebeast. I thought it was pretty clever.
One of my favorite producers, Salamm Remi, talks about an unreleased remix for Lover’s Rock by Sade in 2001. This is a gem of knowledge that will go down in hip-hop trivia books for the ages. RapRadar has an excellent song reference that is worth checking out after watching the video.
On my drive down south to LA and SD last weekend, I got a chance to listen to alot of the mixtapes that I missed or quickly scanned in 2009. I had Tanya Morgan’s Brooklynatti, Wale’s Back To The Feature, J. Cole’s The Warm Up, Cool Kids’ Gone Fishing and UNI’s A Love Supreme. So Far Gone was by far my fav album or mixtape in 2009 but you after spending hours listening to those mixtape, I have to endorse UNI’s A Love Supreme as the best of the lot. Nothing against the other mixtapes but ALS felt more complete, emotional, and truly thought-out. And Ro Blvd was a beast as a producer. So when I saw this on NR, I had to make sure I let you all know, too. Check for it on March 9th. And if UNI is EVER in your town, go see them. Don’t hesitate. One of the few hip-hop acts that are actually performers, too! Thanks to everyone that came out to DANCE RIGHT, THE CROSBY, & BAR DYNAMITE last weekend. Major shout out to MFG, Dan, Roams, Chris, Trackstar, and the homie, DJ Beatnick. Best weekend in a long while.
Hip-Hop heads and football aficionados will appreciate that Jay Elect-willywonka is a sports dude at heart. If you follow him on Twitter, then you already know. With the Superbowl on Sunday, I am going for the Saints along with Jay but I am cheering that Mike Hart plays well. GO BLUE! On a sidenote, didn’t know Jay had a Raekwon grill. Just sayin’. Via NR.

Do I really need to say much about this? Don’t be dumb. Just get it. Nation, I thank you, brotha. Plus a bonus!

Skillz took Snoop’s “I Wanna Rock” beat and just murdered it. On MLK day, he set up a ustream and I happen to be online and listened in. If you ever get a chance to get Skillz on a Ustream session, do yourself a favor and join in. He’s got jokes, answer questions, and like he did on Monday, previewed this track but it leaked on Tuesday. Listen to it and let me know what you think. I think I’m gonna play this in the club versus the original. (via UHTN)
If you haven’t seen Aziz Ansari’s stand-up special on Comedy Central, you’re really missing out. I haven’t laughed this hard at a comedy special since… I don’t know when. Find your friend with the DVR, give him/her your best pair of shoes and then kindly ask that they record the special the next time it comes on. If you really wanna push your luck, ask to record the “uncut”, late-night version because it has an extra 15 minutes w/ a RAAAAAAAANDY segment. Just an FYI.
I’ve been hearing alot buzz about Dam Funk (pronouced “Dame”, right?) from DJ homies outside of the hip-hop world. Anyone want to enlighten me on why this guy is gaining so much momentum and what people like about him? I did find out that he DJs at CARBON (DFLO remembers!) – one of the first places I DJ’ed when I was in LA. True story. I’m reaching out to all 30 KTL readers for some musical help – inform ya, boy! (Yes, we made it to 30 readers. I celebrated w/ an Asahi last night. Next year – 50 readers!)
Tonight at 330 Ritch, there will be a MAJOR event going to help benefit the families of Haiti. I am really proud of the h-hop culture, particularly DJs, that have come together for this cause. I threw my own event last Sunday to raise some money but its real cool to see ppl unifying forces to get action going. Sake1 says better than I could so listen:
“We are all struggling to do our part for tha people of Haiti, who suffered a catastrophic earthquake last week, one that may leave as many as 200,000 people dead and countless more at risk of disease, homelessnes, and trauma.
Please join us in our humble efforts to raise needed funds here in tha Bay Area, this week and into tha future. This is a long-term committment yall — it will take YEARS for Haiti to recover and rebuild, and they will need our support and solidarity through that process. Tha era of tha US neglecting and isolating Haiti is now over — if our government won’t help Haiti’s people, its up to US.”
If you are in the Bay Area, another event will be held at the Shattuck Downlow in Berkele, Supported by Angel Magik, Ankh Marketing, Tastemaker Live, Local 1200, Dee Cee’s Soul Shakedown, Shattuck Down Low, Fiyawata Crew, featuring DJ sets by DJ MPENZi, DJ SERG, DJ I ALEXIS, DJ JAH YZER, DJ CONSHUS and emceed by PHIFE from A TRIBE CALLED QUEST.
