VH1’s best hip-hop songs

VH1 has announced their top 100 hip-hop songs ever.  A crazy and schizophrenic list, I must say.  There are just enough good songs on there to make you feel like they got something right but others that would only be voted in if you were in a fraternity or sorority in the 90s.  How did VH1 go from the biggest hip-hop hater in the 90s and vowed to never play a hip-hop song to our spot for entertaining (not necessarily quality) hip-hop themed shows?  List after the jump…

David Simon working on “Manhunt”

David Simon likes to do what he wants. Cases in point - Generation Kill and now Manhunt. Ripped from IGN:

“The Wire creator David Simon is looking for Abraham Lincoln’s killer. The Hollywood Reporter says Simon may reunite with Tom Fontana, who he worked with on Homicide: Life on the Street, for a new HBO miniseries based on James L. Swanson’s book Manhunt - The book follows the frantic 12 day search for John Wilkes Booth, the man who shot and killed Abraham Lincoln.

The Reporter says the story would focus on less-known historical figures who were involved in the media frenzy surrounding the situation and the manhunt itself. Simon and Fontana will write the screenplay for the project, which is in the early stages of development.”

Going back to Philly - Jeru The Damaja

Jeru. Fred Savage. Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

What can you say about that combo? Miss Info hit us up to the online video for the season of “Always…” I’ve only seen one episode but I’ve been urged to watch more. Ive been told its funnier than Family Guy, smarter than Arrested Development, more neurotic than Curb. Really? (C) Amy Poehler. I need some help people. If you’ve seen it let me know. In the meantime, I’m gonna keep the video on repeat.

David Simon Interview at Cal

David Simon, creator of the best show ever on TV - The Wire, is currently at UC Berkeley for a Writer’s in Residency program. I was invited to attend a private event at Cal where a special group of 40-50 people got to hear him be interviewed by a police reporter from the San Francisco Chronicle. Seeing that they were both journalists, there was a good focus on Season 5 but David Simon also let us into his views on capitalism, the death of the newspaper, and Generation Kill. Hope you enjoy my video! KTL readers who are Wire fans - please post your fav interviews or Wire links in the comments. Enjoy!

The Daily Show’s Rappers or Republicans

This Wyatt Cenac segment from last night is incredible. It’s the sharpest and funniest thing he’s done on the show yet. But, more than anything, it gives me hope for the first time that my dad might actually just be a rapper and not a Republican.

Making The Wire - Moving Image Source

If you are in New York you should check out this discussion about the wire, it is tonight.

The Wire concluded its fifth and final season this year as one of the most acclaimed dramatic series in television history. David Simon, who created, produced, and wrote many episodes, shaped The Wire’s panoramic view of Baltimore-the newspaper, drug trade, port, city government, and schools-has said, “It is really about the American city and how we live together.” This behind-the-scenes program will include a conversation with David Simon, novelist Richard Price (who wrote five episodes), and cast members Seth Gilliam (who played Sgt. Ellis Carver), Clark Johnson (city editor Gus Haynes), Lance Reddick (Lieutenant Cedric Daniels), and Wendell Pierce (Detective William “Bunk” Moreland).

With David Simon, Richard Price, Seth Gilliam, Clark Johnson, Lance Reddick, Wendell Pierce, and Clarke Peters in person. Presented by Museum of the Moving Image at the Times Center, Manhattan.

Nas on Colbert Report

Its sad that the Daily Show and Colbert Report are the only places beyond the internet where I get my political news from. Nas appeared out of nowhere on the Colbert Report last night. But it was cool to see him perform and talk about his petition actions earlier that day at Fox. After the jump is his interview with Colbert. Good times…

Surprise. Surprise

First Surprise. The new Entourage Season 5 trailer went online. I am sure those of you with HBO have already seen it. Not a whole lot of info but looks to be fun. Random note: I got into a conversation the other day with a few homegirls that said “Entourage is just Sex & the City for boys”. I replied that only girls who don’t watch the show think that.

Second surprise. The Wire was AGAIN not nominated for an Emmy this year. Sad, that in its genius 5 seasons, it was only nominated once and that was for writing in 2005. Not that I look to the Emmy’s or any other award show for critical validation but you would think that if the future President of United States is a fan, it deserves some attention. (Actually, I retract that statement b/c if we really thought like that we would all be coloring pictures vs. blogging due to our current President’s interests.) After the jump, David Simon’s farewell letter to the Wire fans. Props to WMD, HHDX, and HBO for the info…

Ice T on Celebrity Family Feud?

So did Ice-T start the whole feud thing with souljah boy because he was going to be on Celebrity Family Feud this week? It sure looks like that’s what he was up to.

Apparently penis wasn’t one of the answers for “name something that’s slippery and hard to hold on to.” I though ice was going to get that one for sure.
