The Wackness – Review

I have been hearing alot of buzz about “The Wackness” and urged by a few people to go watch it.   I was a little put-off by the acting, specifically Method Man’s JaFakin accent.  But after listening to the D-Nice mixtape for the movie and J.Gilla’s review, I’ll prob give it a chance.  Links and review after the jump…

I went and saw the movie The Wackness this weekend in New York. I enjoyed it. Its understated but not crazy powerful- its a comedy/drama so its not like it was going to be some schindler’s list shit as far as acting. I definitely thought the movie was better than the trailer. It reminded me a lot of the crazy stuff you go through when you’re 18, chasing girls and getting wrapped up in that plus it was exactly our year (Franchise’s note: We graduated high school in 1994) and corresponds to our lives at the time. Ben Kingsley was funny. Josh Peck caught some criticism but I thought he reminded me of a real teenager-kind of detached and emotional about things that are innocent and also kind of an idiot. Olivia Thirlby was very natural- she’s the crush we all had in high school who might’ve played us back in the day. It was a funny movie but it might’ve been more enjoyable for me since it was all in new york and felt more real because of that. It was also a pretty movie visually. Its the opposite of  “The Dark Knight”… not a summer blockbuster. Feels more like a version of life through the eyes of a person remembering what its like to be a teenager. Plus, I like that new york isn’t portrayed as glossy or cute the way they make it in movies all the time now. It is hot, shitty, dirty, and very real. That’s why we like it. Also, the soundtrack will just make you happy. Something was so good about the music being played to a movie scene. It was better than a video because the music just seemed like part of life, not some ridiculous party at a club that no one really gets into. In the movie, the music goes between being soundtrack and actually part of scenes like playing Biz Markie at a party. It makes me happiest when hipihop is in everyday situations rather than at clubs. Its like it can be part of life not an event where you have to profile.
The wackness is probably fun to see with somebody. its not a heavy movie, its fun, and its better than seeing it alone like i did.
