Live Blog on Barack’s Speech
Barack’s Acceptance Speech is tonight in Denver. Amart and I will be live blogging on it. See what we have to say after the jump..
***UPDATE: Some others have some reactions about the speech as well. I appreciate the difference of opinions – Rosenberg & his dad. MTV w/ Bun B, Murs, Big Boi, Kenna & Ryan Leslie.
7:14 Barack came out to U2’s city of lights. Smart choice
7:16 The obligatory shout out to the Clintons, Running mate, and family
7:18 Starting to get George Bush for his failed work with the economy and the people of America. Lots of personal examples. Veterans, Single Moms, New Orleans. That was a good jab but not impressive so far.
7:20 “This moment is our chance to keep… the American Hope alive.” Good line.
7:21 Is the crowd saying “asians nuns” or “eight is enough”? Why do they like the TV show so much?
7:22 Calling out John McCain for voting with George W. 90% of the time. Called it a “10% chance on change.” Brought out the “mental recession” and “nation of whiners” statements from McCain’s camp. Ouch!
7:25 “Its not that John McCain doesn’t care. Its that he doesn’t get it.” Alludes to John’s subscription to Reagonmics and ownership economics. Going much more negative than I expected in this speech. Strong but not inspirational. Yet.
7:27 Decided to go with the red tie. Expected but still effective.
7:29 Shout out to grandma. Wants to win it for his grandma. Touching. Would’ve been funny if he said that John McCain was just as old as his grandma.
7:32 Here’s come the “Change” part of the speech. Tax breaks for American jobs. High Tech jobs. Liked the insertion of the “Listen now”. Tax break for the middle class. Set a clear goal of 10 year separation of Middle East Oil. Smart move b/c it will be the asshole after him that ruins his plan. Obama is smart. Wants to go to clean coal, nuclear power, natural gas. Clean cars – shout out to hybrid owners. $150 billion on renewable energy. (Why does Biden look unimpressed? We need some Howard Dean energy from this dude.) Shout out to education. Early childhood education, better salaries for teachers – I am skeptical about that but still trust him. And the biggie, healtcare talk! Lower premiums. Congress treatment. Talked about moms with cancer fighting with insurance companies while in bed. Heart-string tug.
7:39 Now, challenging Democrats to do better. Parents must step up to take of their kids. The Bill Cosby talk. (I like to do bad things because its fun.) Asked John McCain to come with it, if he wants to debate on character and judgement. “John McCain can’t even find Osama Bin Liden in a cave.” – Gangsta.
7:43 – John McCain = Tough talk, bad strategy. Party of Roosevelt (shout to Matt!) and Party of Kennedy. I like that.
7:47 “I got news for you, John McCain…” Lena , my wife, thinks in the First Lady battle Michelle could kick John McCain’s wife’s ass.
7:48 Why he talking about AK-47s? Who uses those anymore? So, 1994.
7:50 John McCain has made this “a big election of small things.” A black man just called out white man envy on the national political stage. Big Boy. “This is election is not about me. Its about you.” Just saw the Obey X Obama poster in the crowd. Shout out to DFLO and Shepard.
7:53 CNN is making a big effort to show the delegates on melanin right now and white men with funny hats on.
7:54 Amart and I notice a small lisp from Obama. Anyone else?
7:56 End of the speech. What is this music? Oh my god, country music. Why? Possible sell out move. Hmmm… What hip-hop song would’ve made the point? Obvious choice: Nas’ “Black President”.
8:00 Biden and Obama on stage with the fam. Biden striking some poses. United Nations looks to be on stage. Still no Mexicans. I like the Aliens and Terminator 2 music. Another Obey X Obama poster. Luckiest man in the world.: Joe Biden.
Overall thoughts: Not his best speech but was good. Best speech was prob the Race speech and then the 2004 Democratic Keynote speech as a close second. Michelle may have one-upped him here. He did hit alot of points and then def did not back down from John McCain. Had a lot of swagger but it was like watching Jay-Z going after LL Cool J. Why address him? But he did and wasn’t a bad move just not inspriring. Kinda feel like the way did after listening to Kingdom Come – good and def did his own thing but wasn’t as big as the hype. Anyways, a historic moment nonetheless and proud to still be voting for Obama. Please share your thoughts with us. (BTW, anyone else hate Wolf Blitzer as a journalist?)

Unfortunately our posting seems to be a misguide observation of a monumental moment in history. This speech shouldn’t be about how he sounded or what songs were played; it should be about what he said. He talked about how this country sucks so much right now, how he will make it better and how his opponent is the wrong person to be president.
He literally said things I only dreamed of hearing, it could be described as surreal. And this is where the real criticism should lay. The statements he made are so good that they are frightening. If elected, he could be our country’s savior (possibly the world) or, he could be the devil incarnate and with perfect deception and manipulation finish what Bush started. This could be reminiscent of an influential German politician of the past…
So we have to ask ourselves, can we have enough faith in one man to make good on our hopes and dream with the stakes so high. For me that is a wary “yes”, fundamentally all McCain’s stances are converse to my own so, basically, I hope God is a Barack supporter otherwise were fucked.
Great comment, Anthony. You def took what Barack said to heart and that type of internalization is inspiring. I’ve watched it for a second time now and I don’t think its his best speech but he def took a stance against McCain. Like you, I am afraid that he is selling us on an attainable promise but like love, you gotta trust that he will do right by us. Time will tell…
Nielsen ratings: 38 million watched Obama DNC speech, more than Olympics, Oscars or American Idol
that’s pretty impressive. good job finding that number. wow.
WOW !!! Those numbers are impressive!
I watched his speech last night and I will be honest and say that I watched it because I felt as if it was the “right” thing to do. I watched my mother get emotional and got a text from my father wondering if I was crying and I told him that I was not optimistic and that I probably won’t cry until if and when he’s elected. He was like I understand where you’re coming from, “But us old folk knows what the nomination means for Black America. We got a long way to go, but we’ve come a long way BABY.” (LOL @ the emphasis on baby).
However, I watched the speech and I thoroughly enjoyed it for the most part. I did not cry up until the end when I began discussing my thoughts and feelings about the speech. It is indeed history, mind-blowing, and lovely to see not only a minority, but a BLACK man as a candidate for Presidency of the US. However, my tears are not tears of joy, but fear. Coming up I was partially taught about prominent African-American leaders, but quickly reminded of their downfall. Long story short, ASSASINATION and skin color. The tears is the fear that once again I will either see a man of such elegance, education, and perseverance become a victim of hatred that results in murder or I will see the direct correlation of my father’s text, “We still have a long way to go.” Meaning that I will witness a man who has every right and the potential to win, but will not simply because of the color of his skin.
In these trying times it is very hard to have faith in or believe a word ANY politician says these days, but I can say that I have been truly intrigued and amazed as to how many people have tuned in and informed themselves about this coming election.
I wish B. Rock the best and I pray that I can live to witness a educated Black male lead, guide, and inspire by example as I have once read about in all of my history books. Its been a long time coming.
And I forgot…I think he made a good point (or maybe it was just a good point for my non-votin ass LOL) but when he said that the choice was basically ours and stating how we can’t hope or wish for someone good to come into the White House and make things happen, but that we have the power to make that happen by of course voting and going for what we know is right and believe in. I can’t recall the exact quote, but its true on so many levels, but false when we think back to the botched elections: Bush and Kerry.
loving your thoughts, e.dot. keep it up.
