Duo Live – They Shootin’ (Live)

Duo Live, representing BK to the fullest, opened up for Ghostface, Red, and Mef on Sunday night at the Mezzanine in San Francisco. Although the remix is a banger, the energy and follow through on the original of each lyric made it a dope performance. I felt bad that the crowd was sleeping on this joint.

Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival – OC, Brand Nubian & J. Period

My favorite mixtape DJ, J. Period, provides us with an inside look and footage from his set “J. Period Mixtape Live” performance at this year’s Brooklyn Hip-Hop festival. He brought out hip-hop vets Brand Nubian and OC. Just sit back and enjoy how its really done.  And I am NOT GOING to the “America’s Most Wanted” tour.  Stop asking me about it.  I’m off to go see racist-ass Transformers 2.

Black Thought Cameo at BHF

The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival was this weekend and as always, its become a quality event each summer. Some might even say that its surpassed Rock The Bells for hip-hop events. WEll, Black Thought came through in a surprise visit and ripped through some classics. Enjoy. Props to MAO.

Raekwon – Staten We Go Hard

raekwon2

When was the last time I had 2 days of Raekwon posts… and it was about music?  Crazy. Chef goes all out on the Jay-z Ode to Brooklyn with his Staten version.  I don’t like anyone else’s version of this song but I have to admit that Rae did his thing.  I am advocating for a “5 Borough” remix.  Rae = Staten, Jay = Brooklyn, Cam = Harlem, Ad Rock = Manhattan, Q-tip = Queens.

Charles Hamilton = “Dukie”

charles_main

Since we are on this Wire trip today…

Whenever I see Charles Hamilton on the webs or MTV Jams, I can’t help but think he’s hip-hop’s “Dukie”. Am I alone on this?

“Brooklyn Girls” has grown on me over the last few months and the hook really is infectious. I have never heard a rapper whose constipation-flow was so hypnotizing. (Really… he sounds like he raps with a tough one coming out!) But after seeing him online freestyling and hearing his tough childhood of being poor & homeless, I couldn’t stop to think, he’s like “Dukie”. He’s smart, broke, doesn’t fit in, likes computers, wears the same clothes… Maybe its just a physical resemblance. Video after the jump to see what you think.

The question I pose then is, if Charles Hamilton is Duquan; which up and coming rappers are Namond, Michael and Randy? KTL community – share your thoughts.

Portrait of JayZ

I love this kind of stuff. Take moment to see what specific letters are used to create this portrait.

From Jeff at PSFK.

Currently based in Hong Kong, Evan Roth is an American artist with a focus in technology, tools of empowerment, open source, and popular culture.  He is also the co-founder of Graffiti Research Lab and F.A.T. (Free Art & Technology), a R&D lab for the public domain.

Over the last five years, he has been pairing typefaces with music to create stunning portraits through a process he refers to as typographic illustration.  After selecting a font, he layers thousands of letters on top of one another until a face emerges.

Evan was recently commissioned to make a video for a new Jay-Z song for RED & the Global Fund to Fight AIDS in Africa.  The song, produced by Kanye West and featuring Santogold, provides the background beats while the letters “Brooklyn” fall into place, creating an image of Jay-Z himself.  Not surprisingly, the video is open source.
