De La Soul – remixes and rares

Cold Rock Da Spot posted earlier this year but unfortunately I missed it. My fail. But I finally got it and wanted to share it with you. The updated the zip file they made has a live version of “potholes” and “Stakes Is High” w/ a unreleased promo remix. As an avid De La fan, I thought I should share this find. By the way, I know you may think I’m crazy but I think Grind Date was their best album. Yeah, I said it. Tracklisting after the jump.

De La Soul – Live and New Songs

Flying under the radar due to the hype of the NBA playoffs, Cassie vs. Rhianna, “Motherlover”, and the Relaspe leak; De La Soul has been making moves and noise with the signature quality music. They just got back from Australia where my favorite mixtape DJ, J. Period, was opening for them. Then they released last week the stellar mix for Nike, which the homie, Dukes, took the time to chop up the mp3 for 2 new songs.

After the jump are some vlogs of J. Period’s trip to Australia and De La discussing the Best of Q-Tip mixtape.

DE LA SOUL – FOREVER

*** UPDATE: I haven’t visited Cold Rock Da Spot in awhile but I am glad I did today because they dropped a great post on De La’s rare songs and remixes then proceeded to give them to you, the hip-hop loving public. Now stop reading and go check it out!

Dante Ross – UnKut Interviews (Pt. 1-3)

dante_rosssd50

Those of us that read liner notes and were interested who was behind the scenes in hip-hop are pretty familiar with who Dante Ross is. This man was pretty much connected to every dope hip-hop group and artists in the 90s (remember seeing the SD50 remix for everything?).  This was especially true when Elektra was popping off with KMD, Leaders of the New School, and Brand Nubian.  Its a good but long read starting with his days at Tommy Boy to present day working with Del and Casual.  He also drops some gems about Grand Puba. Parts 1 through 3 are after the jump for your reading pleasure.

De La Soul X Nike – Are You In?

nike_delasoulcover

Those that need some new music for your workouts now can go to iTunes and hook up a new mix that De La collaborated with Nike on. Although, fitness and running aren’t the first things that come to mind when I think of De La Soul but i think the fact that Nike has reached out to A-Trak and De La are great steps for hip-hop. After the jump is a video of them discussing the project and a cool interview of the group’s early beginnings.

Mos Def – Remixes, Rarities, and more

Another hip-hop confession for all 12 KTL readers, I’m bored with Mos Def. He has just gotten lazy and effortless with his work. If you have been to his shows recently, you know what I mean. 30 min of Jazz scats doesn’t make you deep. Anyways, the video above he loses his sanity for a moment to think he battle Jay-Z. I agree he can whip Lil’ Wayne but so can a pug that’s has digestive problems. But to not hurt those readers that believe Mos Def is authentic (”he’s from Brooklyn!”), funny (”he was on Chapelle show!”), artistic (have you heard “Black on Both Sides?”), an actor (”he’s in the new Gondry film!”) and true hip-hop, I give you a dope collection of rares and remixes. Its a box set that came out in 2006 that is very hard to find in origianl packaging but here for your digital pleasure. Go change your diaper. Tracklisting after the jump.

De La Soul – Excursions 2009

Many of you may be scratching your head like, “What is ‘Excursions’ and why is there a 2009 version”? If your head has been scratched and you got dandruff (pause), then dead yourself. One of my favorite songs from the Low End Theory has been given the remake treatment by fellow Native Tonguers, De La Soul. And although I’m not a big fan of remakes of any song, this one is good. A leaked cut from one of the Djs that inspires me, J. Period. New mixtape dedicated to Tribe coming later this month. BTW, I am still bumping J. Period’s Best of Lauryn, Isley, and Mary tapes – like constantly. And if you didn’t know, Grind Date is De La’s second best album behind De La Soul is Dead. What?!

Freestyle Cypher at G.O.O.D. Music Afterparty (UK)

Lots of moments in this 13 minute video. Kinda reminds you of those ‘93-’94 cyphers. Not that I was ever in one but I did like to stand on the lunch table or bench and look in.

Maybe its the DJ in me but Green Latern gets my vote for fav person in the video. And Will.i.am, unleashing his battle spit. Now, we know he chooses to be weird and a sell-out. Thanks, Mares, for the link!

Memories from an album.. Buhloone Mind State

I’ll admit that when the first De La album dropped, I wasn’t feeling them. Although “Me, Myself, and I” was party anthem, I just wasn’t there with them when it came to their style and look. Then when “De La Soul is Dead” dropped, I was quick to pick up the album just based on the cover art and title alone. “Ring Ring” became my answering machine outgoing message along with everybody else’s. But “Buhloone Mind State” took my fandom to a whole other level. “Breakadawn” was just melodic tour de force for the Plugs. The album had some classic like Ego Trippin Part II and In the Woods.  By the way, whatever happened to Shortie No Mass whose all over the album? Anyways, along with Souls of Mischief, this became my inspirational morning music of that year. So download and enjoy…
