The Hip-Hop Caucus

hip-hopcaucus

I have been feeling bad recently about the lack of posting of electoral or political issues since the Obama inaugration.  Its been this guilt of feeling like a bandwagon politico.  So I am trying to do more of an effort of dropping some knowledge the political front as well.  Let’s See how I do.

The homie, KG, sent me an article today talking about a bill the Hip-Hop Caucus is pushing forward to the senate for driving young voter registration.  The HHC is headed by Rev. Lennox Yearwood and was founded in 2004.  Yearwood is no naive youngster to the politics.  He has been instrumental in Diddy’s “Vote or Die” campaign, Rusell Simmons Hip-Hop Summit, Jay-Z’s “Citizen Change”, and T.I.’s “Respect My Vote“.  An interesting group and one that is trying to make change from within the system. Kid Sister – Format Mag Interview

kidsister_img1

Chicago’s best “halfie” spends sometime with Format Mag while shopping at Tarjay and discussing her move into music.  Some cool personal facts about Melissa are disclosed here, like what she would if she wasn’t in music, her degree, and her dream date would be.  On a random observant note, does she have a likeness to Kira from the “Dark crystal” or is it just me?  Full interview after the jump.

Chuck D on Obama

chuck_d

Chuck D offers a very insightful and kinda all over the place address to Obama’s new presidency.  He has been asked about Obama a lot during the elections b/c no one else knew who to turn to for hip-hop’s “intelligent” political voice – at least in the media’s eyes.  (Note: there are some very smart, articulate, political conscious MCs out there. I know. You can tell me yours in the comments.) Its thought provoking to say the least and you gotta give it up, he hasn’t softened up as he hits near 50.  Good stuff, Chuck, you’re still a hero of mine. (via Fatlace and hiphop.com)

Goapele – Change is gonna come/Find a Way (live)

Finally got around to uploading and posting some videos I’ve had of Goapele performing at the Mezzanine in San Francisco. This was at an Obama Fundraiser last month that I was the house DJ for. Really good times and energy. Also gotta chance to meet and hang-out with Zion-I, DJ Shortkut, and Goapele. All three were very cool peeps. Anyways, hope you enjoy it and peep a video of her performing “Closer” after the jump. And by the way, she has her hair pulled back to sidebraids and no she did not shave her head.

That Just Happened! /Now what?

Today I find it is hard for me to report something different than what is already being reported in the media. I suppose what is best is to just share with you my personal experience from last night, and then invite everyone to do the same. I want to know your election experience, feelings, perspective and anecdotes. Please post your stories via the comment thread, or email me and I will post the best stories separately.

What Change Looks Like.

Go vote, then come join us for election night party and celebration tonight. PARTY INFO.

If you live in a California, or an otherwise deep blue state, you should still vote to give Obama that political mandate and momentum to help him govern in his first term. Also there are many issues that need your attention on a local level, where some would argue your vote carries more weight and power then in a national election.
